I investigate in my PhD thesis how a man living with a spinal cord injury (SCI) can be portrayed in a well-researched approach by applying medical and scientific accuracy in a genre novel that typically uses stereotypes and clichéd portrayals of such characters. For this, I have developed a creative artefact featuring a military veteran who sustained an SCI in which I explore the lived experience of disability. In writing about a person who has sustained an SCI, my main focus is on the informed portrayal of a character with a disability in a military suspense romance. This focus further allows me to investigate this type of disability in greater detail in which I am aiming to increase verisimilitude to the main character and the plot in the artefact. My further aim is to create a deeper understanding of such an injury and to evoke empathy and connection to a main character who presents with an SCI. I additionally explore speculative advance therapy concepts in SCI in my creative artefact by investigating how science may contribute to improve the socio-economic, personal and medical outcomes portrayed in the artefact through my main character living with an SCI by combining existing SCI therapy approaches on a speculative level.
