Abstract
Pacific Island countries are faced with diverse challenges from risks posed by current climate variability and future climate change, and by the burden of increasingly unhealthy diets for their populations’ wellbeing and quality of life. Multiple efforts to support climate adaptation have been mobilized at all levels of governance. For decades there has been a consistent impetus from donors and international cooperation agencies to make these interventions effective and sustainable. In addition, adapting food systems to climate change and securing sustainable and healthy diets is key for the achievement of many Sustainable Development Goals.
The aim of this research was to explore opportunities to improve climate change adaptation planning in the context of rural communities in the Pacific Islands. The research focused on how climate adaptation is conceived and how integrative thinking about food systems, climate change and food security can be utilized to better target adaptation investments, while also improving the quality of life for people living in peripheral (non-core) areas of the Pacific.
