Abstract
Globally the participation of private landholders is considered essential to protect biological diversity, including native flora and fauna and their habitats. Approximately two thirds of Australia’s land is managed by private landholders. In Australia, a nationwide focus on encouraging conservation on private property has resulted in the creation of different programmes to facilitate this outcome, one of which is Land for Wildlife (LfW).
The aim of this research was to better understand the motivation and characteristics of landholders registered in the LfW programme to enact pro-nature conservation behaviour, including proceeding to the greater commitment of a Voluntary Conservation Agreement on their property. This research investigated the role of the programme, as well as underlying social-psychological and personality variables affecting individual LfW registrants.
