Abstract

spoken Indonesian sociolinguistics diglossia pedagogy
The purpose of this research was to contribute to the learning and teaching of Indonesian as a foreign language by defining Spoken Indonesian (SI), and incorporating it in a pedagogic design in order to increase Australian students' proficiency in Indonesian as the target language. Indonesian language is one of the Asian languages taught in Australian schools and universities. The Australian Government's 2012 White Paper, Australia in the Asian Century, identifies the learning of Asian languages as a key strategic component in aligning Australia's economic and security interests with the countries of the Asian region.
