Abstract
Background and Aims
Hospital-based ward nurses are not consistently performing basic life support (BLS) at expected levels, resulting in the failure or delays in BLS initiation on the patient experiencing an in-hospital cardiac arrest within recommended time frames. However, there is a lack of evidence which explores the experiences of non-intensive care nurses performing BLS in-hospital. This is unfortunate, as understanding nurses’ experiences with performing BLS may assist in answering why this is occurring given that nurses are usually the first to respond to a patient experiencing a cardiac arrest. The aim of this thesis was to improve in-hospital, non-intensive care nurses cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) confidence and performance by the following objectives: (1) undertake an in-depth exploration of the experiences of real-life resuscitation events, identifying issues with performing BLS and current BLS education, (2) develop and implement an innovative BLS teaching and learning curriculum, and (3) determine whether the targeted education curriculum was perceived as beneficial in improving BLS confidence and performance. The overarching aim of this thesis was to gain insight into nurses’ experiences in performing in hospital BLS, and to address these experiences through tailored educational support in BLS. For the purpose of this project, the phrase intensive care nurses (ICU)will be meant to represent nurses working in areas which require advanced cardiac life support (ALS/ACLS) not BLS. Such areas could be intensive care units, emergency departments, and operating theatres.
