Abstract
This thesis investigates a number of contemporary trends that are leading towards the creation of what the author calls a cyborg virtual corporeality. A cyborg is typically thought of as a hybrid being made up of biological and artificial or technological elements. Cyborgs have long been imagined in literature, popular culture, scientific, medical and military contexts and represent a form of human-machine existence which can be manifest in a wide range of physical or virtual forms. This research is concerned, in particular, with how the consciousness of a cyborg-in this case, a human-computer entity designed to exist and operate entirely within a virtual environment-might be understood. It also explores the emerging new realities that are only just beginning to intersect with our familiar, physical world-realities that are created when elements from the virtual and the natural worlds are combined.
