Abstract
With few exceptions the research on commitment has, to date, considered or been allocated to either an attitudinal approach or a calculative approach. This is particularly true of research on commitment in the workplace. Workplace commitment has largely concentrated on commitment to the organisation, particularly attitudinal commitment, with some studies on commitment to the occupation. This study has used a new conceptualisation of the bases of both attitudinal and calculative commitment and applies this new conceptualisation to both organisational commitment and occupational commitment. It is believed that these concepts together represent the constituent elements of workplace commitment. The study considers the relationship between workplace commitment and withdrawal behaviours (represented by turnover intentions, absenteeism and lateness). It also examines a range of characteristics to determine whether they may be antecedents of workplace commitment.
