Abstract
This thesis examines how practising early childhood teachers employed in kindergarten settings understand and manage their changing roles regarding information communication technologies in the context of their kindergarten. Nineteen participants (eighteen females and one male), with between three and forty years of experience working in early childhood education and care settings, were involved in the study, permitting the generation of substantive theory. Participants in this study were employed to fulfil the role of the early childhood teacher and were working in a kindergarten setting. This qualitative study focused on gaining an understanding of the early childhood teachers' lived experiences, ascribed meanings, perspectives, actions and interactions regarding how they understood and managed their changing roles with information communication technologies in the context of their kindergarten. The research frameworks of Crotty (1998) and O'Donoghue (2007) were used to structure the research design. Symbolic interactionism provided the theoretical lens through which to investigate the participant's social realities and grounded theory, in particular, a Strauss and Corbin (1990, 1998) and Corbin and Strauss (2008, 2015) approach to grounded theory provided the methodological theory and methods. Data were collected using semi-structured, in-depth interviews and analysed using the systematic approach proposed by Strauss and Corbin (1990, 1998), Corbin and Strauss (2008, 2015) which were inclusive of open, axial and selective coding with constant interrogation, constant comparison of the data occurring as data collection was interspersed with data analysis.
