Abstract
It is widely acknowledged that people with intellectual disability are less likely to have the same degree of internet access as people without intellectual disability. As a consequence of this digital inequality, people with intellectual disability can experience a digital divide. Individuals who experience a digital divide are at risk of becoming disadvantaged socially, economically, and civically as they do not have equitable access to online services, resources, and information. This inequality has the potential to compound the lack of control and opportunity that individuals with intellectual disability often experience in their everyday lives. This thesis examines internet use by people with intellectual disability with the following aims: (i) to identify what is currently known about digital inequality experienced by people with intellectual disability; (ii) to establish which demographic and contextual factors are associated with the digital inequality experienced by people with intellectual disability; (iii) to identify the extent to which internet use by people with intellectual disability can be explained by a motivational theory; and, (iv) to identify the strategies used by caregivers to support internet use by people with intellectual disability.
