Abstract
As businesses navigate an ever-evolving landscape marked by gender equality initiatives, rapid digitalisation, and increased globalisation, cultural sensitivity becomes crucial for effective leadership, especially when managing employees from varying national cultures. This trend is also evident in Europe's highly competitive medical device industry, where leaders must be culturally aware of gender-specific expectations in middle management. A literature review shows several critical research gaps in cross-cultural leadership and gender dynamics within the medical device industry. Existing studies have predominantly focused on cultural differences while neglecting gender differences, often with a limited representation of women in participant samples. Moreover, more attention has been given to the specific effects of industries, and the medical device industry still needs to be explored, mainly in terms of its cultural values and gender-specific leadership expectations. Additionally, the scarcity of research on the impact of Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) on leadership behaviour, particularly from the leader's perspective, is not solely due to the absence of investigation. Exploring the influence of gender-role attitudes and industrial culture on LMX is crucial as it expands the understanding beyond the limited follower-centric approach. It allows comprehension of how the broader cultural context shapes leaders' behaviours within the LMX relationship. This study addresses these gaps by answering the question: 'To what extent do gender-role attitudes moderate leadership behaviour in a masculine and feminine culture?'
