Abstract
Increasing dynamics and complexities of the business environment drive organisations to increase their dynamic capabilities. Hence, agility has become a core competency of today’s management for the survival and sustainable success of organisations. To achieve higher levels of corporate agility, the theory of self-organisation suggests applying decentralised structures of autonomous, self-reliant, and interconnected agents. This can be applied by empowering Middle Management (MM) and granting advanced power to the Organisational Units (OUs), such as departments and business units. Thus, the central question of this research is: How can the agility of OUs be managed based on MM empowerment?
The literature review conducted for this study has revealed research gaps in the body of dynamic capability theory in the context of OUs. Addressing these gaps, a theoretical model was developed comprising the key elements and factors crucial for managing agility at the MM level.
