The intent of this Doctorate of Creative Arts (Creative Writing) is to creatively address the research questions: What is the relationship between narcissism, social networking and violence? How can that relationship be evidenced in a young adult (YA) novella? An analysis into current YA fiction reveals that very few published Australian novels respond to how social networking affects teen narcissism and violence, or how these three components interact to foster maladaptive behaviours. The purpose of the creative artefact-the original novella 'Lepidoptera'-is to respond to this lacuna. The novella, set in Queensland's Sunshine Coast, portrays the complex trinity of social networking, narcissism and violence and its effects on teens. 'Lepidoptera' is a polyphonic, epistolary novella with disjunctive narratives and postmodern scraps underpinned by the extended metaphor of the butterfly.
