Abstract
Novel Abstract: Imagine discovering in your mid-thirties that you really didn't know your father. Why he migrated from Palestine to Australia, why he said the things he did, and what tormented him when he was alone. Ishmael's Oud is a father-son journey from Australia to Occupied Palestine. It is a story of contradiction and love, betrayal and trauma. Exegetical Abstract: The exegesis which accompanies Ishmael's Oud details the methodologies used to construct the novel. Practice-led and ethnographic research are drawn upon to highlight and lay bare the creative process. The organisation of Ishmael's Oud and its hybrid form is considered; namely the multiple points of view used and the integration of poetry with prose. The combination of writing memoir and biography is a notable feature of Ishmael's Oud.
