Abstract
Physique traits impact on competitive success across a range of sports, therefore accurate methods of measuring and monitoring change in body composition are required to optimise training or dietary interventions. Many factors have been shown to influence reliability or precision of measurement which has been recognised by manufacturers of body composition assessment equipment. A series of four studies were conducted to investigate the relationship between the presentation of an athlete prior to assessment and the reliability of a range of body composition assessment methods. A better understanding of the factors that influence this relationship enabled the development of best practice protocols that may enhance identification of real change in body composition, reducing the need to rely on biological assumptions and thus improving the validity of body composition assessment.
