Abstract
Dr Shawn Fracchia's unique research is at the intersection of immigration and education. Using historical inquiry and critical discourse analysis methodologies, Shawn investigated child asylum-seekers’ access to formal education. The work examines policies and practices developed before and after asylum-seeker children in Australia's Immigration Detention Centres had access to schooling, detailing persistent and significant breaches of children’s right to education under the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The study provides policymakers, educators and the broader Australian community with an understanding of the educational and human rights implications of keeping children in immigration settings.
