Abstract
Aquaculture is one of the world's fastest growing businesses; aquaculture production has continuously increased and currently accounts for more than 44.10% of fisheries production worldwide. Shrimp is one of the world's leading traded fishery products by value, representing 15.30% of the total trade value (US$148 billion) in 2014; banana shrimp (Feneropenaeuse merguensis) is one of the major types of shrimp farmed in Australia, accounting for 30% of the total shrimp production. However, shrimp farming has been facing difficulties from massive losses in production due to viral diseases; to date, routine biosecurity management is still not reliable enough to prevent disease outbreaks from viral infections. One alternative to prevent viral disease outbreaks is selective breeding, which aims to generate shrimp lines that are genetically resistant to viruses.
