Abstract

decision support systems UTAUT general practitioner
The practice of medicine is very information intensive, and this information will continue to increase. Researchers argue that general practitioners (GPs) are not able to keep up to date with best practice without some assistance in their decision making; this may be achieved using decision support systems (DSS). However, in the medical field the use of DSS is limited. Thus this research addresses the research question of: How and why do general practitioners use decision support systems? Based on this research question, three research issues were developed: 1) Why do GPs use DSS? 2) Why do GPs not use DSS? and 3) How can GPs' use of DSS be increased? To address the research question and research issues, a review of the technology acceptance literature and decision support literature was undertaken. This review identified gaps in the body of knowledge for decision support system acceptance and context specific technology acceptance. A theoretical model was developed consisting of four constructs (performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence and facilitating conditions) from the UTAUT (Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology) and two additional factors identified from the literature, workflow and involvement in the development of DSS.
