This thesis, Exploring Student Accommodation in Australia: Towards an Integrated Approach explores tertiary students' housing needs and requirements in Australia. In recent times, Australia's higher education sector witnessed increase in enrolments of both domestic and overseas students. The student population grew from 700,000 students in 2001 to 1.3million in 2013. Aside from the growth in student population, greater diversity is found in the student population. For example, the number of women who are now studying has increased from 27.1 per cent in 1970 to 57.9 per cent in 2013. There has also been a large increase in the number of mature age students accessing higher education, increase in international students' enrolment as well as students from families in which a university education has not been the norm (referred to as first in family).
