Abstract

Education systems Curriculum and pedagogy Technology Digital technology Outdoor Education Outdoor Experiential Learning
Digital technologies have the potential to both be a distractor and enhancer of outdoor education, depending upon how they are used. Currently, there is very research in thisarea, and novice facilitators of outdoor education find the choice of using or excluding technology is a challenge. The research questions that informed my study were: “Which functions of digital technology are being included and excluded by facilitators in outdoor education?”; “What do facilitators consider when including and excluding digital technology in outdoor education?”; and “What are the pedagogical consequences of including and excluding digital technology in outdoor education?” The study adopted the constructivist paradigm because of the relativist ontology of the subject matter where participants are co-creators, and an empiricist epistemology of experiential learning. Data was collected over an eight month period from 150 participants who completed a survey and 32 participants who completed a semi-structured interview. All data was collected online as the study was conducted during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The quantitative data was analysed using the statistical package SPSS. The qualitative data was thematically analysed through a reductionist approach using the software NVivo. Informed consent was obtained from all participants and ethics approval was granted before any data was collected.
