Abstract

Public health Sociology psychological well-being resilience social captial postgraduate students
Regardless of the efforts to promote well-being and make university spaces healthier, studies have shown that university students experience a higher rate of mental health problems in comparison to their non-student counterparts. As many as 50% of university students experience a range of mental ill-health issues. Despite awareness of suitable support services, many students choose to conceal their emotional and mental health issues. Studies have shown the importance of resilience and social capital in health behaviour and overall well-being. However, there is limited research on how the elements of social capital, resilience, and well-being interact with each other. Consequently, understanding the inter-relationship between these elements is important in developing well-rounded health promotion strategies, and if measured could generate useful data for researchers. The objective of the research was to explore the relationship between resilience, social capital, and psychological well-being among postgraduate students. Additionally, the study aimed to develop and validate a hybrid survey tool that encompasses these elements for effective measurement and assessment. The following research questions guided this research: Research Question 1: What are the main items necessary to measure social capital, resilience, and well-being in postgraduate students? Sub question: What are the correlations between gender, age, hours of paid work, voluntary work, or time you spend participating in social clubs, sports hobbies, or clubs weekly and social capital, resilience, and well-being in postgraduate students? Research Question 2: What is the relationship between social capital, resilience, and well-being in postgraduate students? Research Question 3: How do postgraduate students understand social capital and its relationship with resilience and well-being?
