Abstract

English curriculum pedagogy relational knowledge secondary English preservice teachers
This thesis presents the findings of an action research study that examined the efficacy of a framework which was developed to deliver a quality secondary English curriculum course for preservice teachers. The framework was developed from the research literature that offered insights into how teaching English in schools, and teacher preparation to do the same, has developed in Australia since the 1960s. Quality English teaching has long been considered important for school students' overall success, with parallels made to the nation's prosperity. Hence, over time, English teacher preparation has been scrutinised in a variety of fields including the media, government, education bodies, the public, and schools. The principal aims of this thesis were, in the first instance, to design and deliver a course of study that was based on research literature recommendations and which withstood the scrutiny of stakeholders. The second, and associated aim, was to explore 'how' to implement the framework within a predetermined time limit. The outcomes of the study will contribute to knowledge about English course/program design and delivery at universities and schools.
