Abstract

Chlamydia pecorum diagnostics serology antibody response sheep
Globally, Chlamydia pecorum is a ubiquitous and significant pathogen frequently reported in livestock. C. pecorum infections are also widespread across Australia’s mainland koala populations. Infections caused by this pathogen are highly diverse, resulting in varying disease manifestations and pathologies across the hosts infected. Despite these infections being widespread and resulting in significant health and economic impacts, there are major knowledge gaps in (a) the relationship between chlamydial shedding and overt animal pathology, (b) the questions about the performance and species-specificity of the existing serological methods, including their interpretation required for treatment of infections and, (c) the lack of strain-specific serological assays which are particularly useful in diagnosing C. pecorum strains associated with specific diseases. All the aforementioned knowledge gaps significantly hinder our understanding of the complex diagnosis picture, epidemiology and effective ways to control C. pecorum infections in domesticated and wildlife hosts.
