Abstract

capacity building public health nutrition practice
Public health nutrition as a field of practice and workforce development has progressed rapidly over the past decade in a number of countries, including Australia. There has been a recent emphasis on increasing the size of the public health nutritionworkforce, but there has been an insufficient focus on the nature of practice and the effectiveness of the public health nutrition workforce. To date, capacity building has not played a significant role in public health nutrition practice, despite capacity building being identified as a critical core function of the public health nutrition workforce. Capacity building efforts thus far have been largely invisible and there has been little recognition of capacity building as a public health strategy in its own right. This thesis used a mixed-method study design involving three investigative stages to investigate capacity building in the specific context of public health nutrition practice to: 1. Conceptualise capacity building in a public health nutrition practice context; 2. Refine this conceptual framework based on consensus development amongst practitioner experts; and 3. Apply the conceptual framework in public health nutrition practice.
