Abstract
Community health workers (CHWs) are increasingly being promoted as a potential solution to overcome critical shortages in the health workforce to deliver primary health care internationally. However, there is little research on the development of CHWs professional identity and preparedness in Low-Middle income countries such as Papua New Guinea (PNG). The work of CHWs is especially important in geographically remote communities and the formulation of professional identity determines the competence, effectiveness and longevity of CHWs to work in remote communities. Therefore, the purpose of this research project was to explore the construction of CHWs professional identity to practise in rural and remote settings of PNG. To achieve this purpose, four studies were conducted. The first study explored how CHWs' professional identity was developed in PNG historically. The second study explored and described the final year CHW students' perception on how professional identity of CHWs is constructed towards practice in rural and remote settings in PNG. The third study explored and described the CHW clinicians' perception on how the professional identity of CHWs is constructed as well as CHW clinicians' experiences of practice in rural and remote settings in PNG. The final study explored and described the stakeholders' perceptions on how professional identity of CHWs is constructed towards practice in rural and remote settings in PNG.
