Abstract
Extended scope roles such as the Advanced Health Practitioner are a contemporary solution used for workforce redesigns in response to the multiple pressures placed on the health care system worldwide. Health professional role substitution has been successful in reducing waiting times, releasing medical specialist time, improving patient outcomes and has a high patient satisfaction rating. The aim of this PhD thesis was to explore and document the impact of introducing a new transdisciplinary extended scope role, the Advanced Health Practitioner (Adv HP), within a geriatric outpatient setting. The new redesigned aged-care model placed the Adv HP role as the initial point of patient contact, in contrast to traditional medical models where a specialist medical practitioner is the first point of contact. A pre-post mixed method research design of the overall study was chosen in order to add data to the current evidence base, attempting to fill gaps identified in the current literature and inform future workforce redesigns regarding extended scope of practice roles.
