Abstract
It is a continual challenge to engage and extend middle years students in science. One of the two sub-strands within the Science as a Human Endeavour strand of the Australian Curriculum: Science is to "explore how science knowledge and application affects people's lives … and how science … can be used to inform decisions and actions" (ACARA, 2011). This paper will explore how some students 'do' science in a community based project context; designing a local skate and recreational park, and the role that science plays in their decision making and problem solving. This project is underpinned by the theoretical framework of Knowledge Producing Schools (KPS) (Bigum & Rowan, 2009). This framework uses learning opportunities where students produce work on an authentic task that is important to their local community. Experts are drawn from the community to support the students as they work through their project
