Abstract
Fiji, the second largest economy among the South Pacific island states after Papua New Guinea, faces two key problems: a lack of women’s representation in entrepreneurial activities, with only 19% of Fijian women participating as business owners, and its extreme vulnerability to impacts of climate change. To address these wicked problems, we posit women can contribute to sustainable development through entrepreneurial business under the banner of the Blue Economy, linked to the sustainable governance of ocean resources for socioeconomic growth. In our paper, we identify ways in which Fijian women pursue emancipatory entrepreneurial activities for their communities. Drawing on a networked entrepreneurial ecosystem perspective, we propose a conceptual framework of how Fijian women can increase their social, financial, digital, institutional and environmental networks, contributing to their greater empowerment, economic participation and sustainable development. Taking this approach means we can consider a holistic ecosystem approach to improve Fijian women’s entrepreneurship, empowerments and contribution to sustainable development. We propose a qualitative research method examining this topic.
