Abstract
Using actors as simulated patients in midwifery simulation is limited due to the need for realistic physiology that reflects body changes in pregnancy and an inability to perform invasive examinations. Using basic maternity resources and low cost items a simulated maternity model has been created that can be worn by an actor. This replicates the pregnant abdomen, enables students to palpate foetal position, perform a vaginal examination and listen to the foetal heart. This low cost device provides a high level of fidelity and preserves the actor’s dignity. The presentation outlines how the apparatus is made and used in midwifery simulation, includes an opportunity for hands-on trial of the apparatus. This will be of interest to simulation technicians, academics and clinicians involved in midwifery education.
