Abstract
This presentation is part of a commissioned grant that commenced at the beginning of 2014. Currently, there is no uniform approach to training the day to day supervisors (preceptors) of students across the health disciplines. Although there is a body of literature on strategies to enhance learning in a clinical setting, there is less focus on the capacity of individuals to provide quality supervision. Existing resources are targeted at the clinical supervisor or facilitator, and much of the material is focused on specific disciplines (in particular, nursing) and lacks an integrated approach. Yet, there is evidence to suggest that the preceptor plays one of the most important roles in the clinical learning environment. Although professional competencies may require supervisors of a certain level of experience, supervisors may lack training in the intricacies of quality supervision. Therefore, the aim of this project are to: 1) develop a clinical supervision training module shared among the disciplines of nutrition and dietetics, sport and exercise science and occupational therapy; 2) implement and evaluate the module from the perspective of all stakeholders; 3) explore the barriers and enablers to embedding the module within other disciplines that incorporate WIL; and, 4) investigate perceptions on how the module can be sustained in the future. We will use a pre-post questionnaire to measure the change in confidence and learning of participants, and a survey after completion of module to rate the useability and functionality of the module. To add depth to the data collection, semi structure interviews with participants will explore strengths, weaknesses and future improvements, while focus groups with WIL placement coordinators will explore strategies for sustainability. It is anticipated that this research will result in a quality training module that will empower preceptors so that they can directly influence the quality of supervision of students, and produce a sustainable resource that can be embedded into other disciplines with WIL at USC.
