Abstract
Based on the infinity logo that becomes complete or is it unravelling? The Whole is Greater than the Sum of its Parts-Today's tertiary teacher is continually in need of updating their personal "learning and teaching toolkit". On any given day or time we may need to be technologists, administrators, mental health care providers and career counsellors. We also may be called upon by learners to provide parental, monetary, time management and maybe even love advice! Add to this our original job descriptors: teacher, expert in the field, researcher, community leader, inspirational speaker, innovator, and possibly even entertainer. This TeachChat asks the question "How do YOU keep it all together?" The discussion is designed to address how we as tertiary teachers engage with our own lifelong learning-not only to stay relevant in our disciplines and our transmission tactics but also how to regenerate and reboot ourselves in order to remain vital and healthy. With a focus on the tutorial, Phyllis kicks off the chat by sharing the tools of her own passionate pedagogic journey that promote a sustainable practice. Practical explanation of these "tools" will be demonstrated as they extend through course content, teaching methods and self-preservation tactics. Through reflective practice, the TeachChat will identify challenges with "keeping it all together" for each of the three areas of focus: • Course Content • Teaching Transmission • Self-preservation Discussion will move forward to identify coping mechanisms, methods, tactics and ideas as the open chat evolves into participatory action research with participants sharing stories and solutions aiming to create a community of practice that is greater than the sum of its parts.
