Abstract
Engaging with the scholarship of teaching requires an interrogation and investigation of professional practices by professional practitioners themselves and in collaboration with others; scholarly research on practice that is critically informed, politically activist, action oriented and transformative; and a desire to more deeply understand professional practices with a view to transforming academic teaching into a reformed and richer set of practices (Aspland, Hargreaves and Smeal, 2003). This paper explores the conditions in a university setting that are required for such engagement and critiques the landscape at USC with a view to examining what is possible and which pathways may be best for professional positioning of this type.
