The otherness of the contemporary: Researching the 'creative' in creative writing through the adaptation and re-visioning of literary classics

Abstract
In a recent survey of creative writing students' perceptions of creative writing within the academy (used in Watkins, 2008) a number of respondents noted what they saw as an important distinction between creat ive writing and other academic subjects: that creative writing seemed to present the opportunity for the recognition of existing competencies rather than to treat the beginning student as a tabu la rasa. The practices of creative writing had seemed to provide students with a sense of agency that implici tly recognised abilities, experiences, and cultural understandings as they interact with new knowledge. That the pedagogy of creative writing acknowledg es that creativity is a dialogic process that is always an act in media res (Pope 2005) is perhaps one of its greatest stre ngths. Thi s, however, presents a particularly difficult challenge for the demonstration and assessment of the students' interaction with new knowledge deve loped throughout the course of a semester (a requirement of any unit of work with in an in stitutional setting). In this paper, I will discuss experiences of researching using approaches to literary texts as a catalyst for creative adaptation, revisioning, critique and for subversion as outlined in Pope's Textual Interventions (1995) as one of the potential ways to isolate, and therefore demonstrate, the choices that the writer has made about the cu lture they are writing out of, as well as the culture to which they understand they are writing in to, thereby demonstrating the ir own interaction in the production of new knowledge.
