Abstract

Tourism
The aim of this paper is to explore the journeys of tourism scholars within their teaching and research spaces of moving across Asian boundaries. Such research goals are prompted by the paucity of literature in examining how Asian identities (personal and professional) facilitate or inhibit one's tourism scholarship. As Asia is considered to be one of the key regions of the world in terms of tourism growth, other trends are likewise indicating that the number of tourism scholars in the region is increasing. This research is therefore a timely investigation to a highly under-researched area of researcher ethnic identity and its manifestation on academia. This paper presents the outcomes from 18 self-completed questionnaires and highlight that very few scholars would identify with their ethnic background or nationality, and instead emphasise their career or research expertise. This research further illustrates the tensions between one's ethnic background and the professional expectations and pressures of tourism scholars within contemporary higher education.
