Abstract

Curriculum and Pedagogy Papua school education University of the Sunshine Coast
This presentation draws on the findings of a large Indonesian/ USC research study of children, communities and schools across all regions of the Indonesian Province of Papua and the implications of the study for school education and for teacher education in universities, and USC in relation to its work in Papua. The study involved several thousands of children and their families and communities. It examined the impact of children's health, nutrition, and cognition and the cultural, social and child development practices in communities on the capacity of the children to undertake formal schooling. Study findings present a clear case for a reformation of the way in which schools across the Province engage with their communities and place a high priority on developing new ways in which teachers are prepared and professionally developed to respond to the diversity of learning and teaching challenges in their classrooms. Recommended responses are outlined and the implications for pedagogy described. This presentation demonstrates how the Papuan Communities (1000's of participants) were actively engaged in many ways in the research (surveys, interviews and observations of childrearing, nutrition, story telling, etc) and how teachers and classrooms were engaged and which pedagogies they employed (Flanders studies, surveys, observations, etc). It then reflects on the findings in terms of matching the needs of the diverse communities of Papua and how many schools are (at present) disengaged from the communities and asks 'where to from here?'. The commitment to engagement and diversity across all aspects of the project may offer a model for other colleagues.
