Abstract
Students find their initiation into world history a challenge. As HIS 140 in an introductory course students need to be nurtured into this subject. To provide a stimulating and safe environment for students a range of teaching innovations have been developed to model key features of world historical thinking. These include playing with 'interactive webs' via the computer program Vensim, a weekly general knowledge 'challenge', the running of weekly debates from week 4-week 8 on themes from the lectures and readings, and also a 'pick of the course' invitation for the final lecture.
