Abstract
How notions of stages and mechanisms in birth have influenced midwifery practice. The historical context and development of these concepts will be discussed in relation to current evidence. Defining the birth process through stages and mechanisms has influenced women's experience of birth and midwifery practice. This presentation will explore the impact of these concepts and consider alternative descriptions of the birth process.
