Short Story as disruptive event
Great Writing International Creative Writing Conference, 25th (Online, 09-Jul-2022 - 10-Jul-2022)
2022
Abstract
James Joyce (1882 – 1941) describes an epiphany as a ‘sudden spiritual manifestation’, a moment or event that shifts a character’s world view. Badiou (1937-) describes an ‘event’ as an ontological disruption in the appearance of normality, through awareness of a discrepancy in perceived reality. Kuhn (1922- 1996) describes a paradigm shift as a similar disruption in what Lyotard (1924-1998) calls a ‘grand narrative’ where a series of anomalies allow a new way of framing the world.
Applying these concepts to how short stories are shaped and crafted, this presentation explores how I have ‘bowerbirded’ such concepts in a Creative Writing course - ‘Writing the short story’, how they can be applied to the plot structure of Freitag’s pyramid, and how students have used these theories of disruption to write award winning and publishable short stories.
