Abstract

Specialist Studies in Education Learning Catalytics flipped classroom
I have been flipping my Fluid Mechanics course (ENG211) for two years now. In the course, students are required to work through narrated online eLectures each week (on Mediasite) before attending weekly face-to-face workshops. Students need to answer a number of prelecture questions each week (through Learning Catalytics) based on the eLecture content. This year, I trialled a new student response system called Learning Catalytics (https:// learningcatalytics.com/) which allows students to use their mobile devices (phones, tablets, laptops) to respond to a variety of question types. The workshops were then used to promote student engagement by working through typical problems (individually and in groups), providing feedback, introducing advanced concepts, and facilitating student discussions and other collaborative learning activities. In this presentation, I will demonstrate how the Learning Catalytics (LC) software works and explain some of its unique features. I will also discuss how I used LC and the flipped classroom approach to try to engage students with the course material and with each other. I will also discuss how I have been undertaking learning analytics on statistical data produced by Mediasite to try to discover more about student learning behaviour and how it affects student performance.
