Abstract
The sea change phenomenon involves the in-migration to coastal regions of diverse social groups including retirees, the unemployed, gentrifiers and service providers. Growth pressures create particular challenges for local councils, particularly in relation to housing displacement and support service provision. Over the forthcoming decades these challenges will be heightened by climate change impacts which increase temperatures, decrease rainfall, raise sea levels and increase cyclones and storms. The success of council action plans and strategies requires an understanding of long term climate change impacts, as well as cognisance of regional population diversity. This session discusses a proposed ARC grant submission which seeks to develop a participatory future-orientated toolkit to facilitate climate change adaptation and mitigation by building on community knowledge, innovation, and resilience in sea change communities and regions.
