Abstract

Nursing Specialist Studies in Education antenatal education
Background: Education programs for women and their partners in the antenatal period have become an accepted aspect of antenatal care. A wide range of programs are available offering differing philosophies, approaches and content. Despite these developments over time research which explores the underpinning process, practice and pedagogy of antenatal programs is limited. Aims: This project aims to explore: the social, cultural and political influences on the development of contemporary antenatal programs; the pedagogy and practice of antenatal educators in a range of contexts; and what consumers of these programs consider to be a meaningful learning experience within the context of antenatal education. Research Questions: 1. What cultural, social and organisational factors influence curriculum, pedagogy and practice in contemporary antenatal education? 2. a) What key factors influence antenatal educator's pedagogy and practice? b) How do these factors influence programme design and curriculum? 3. What do consumers of antenatal education consider as meaningful learning in this context? Methods: Interpretive Description Methodology (Thorne 2008) is being used and methods for this research include, interviews with antenatal educators who will be asked to bring along teaching material to the interview for discussion also interviews with consumers of antenatal education. Analysis and interpretation will be framed by using Morse's (1994) cognitive process.
