Prioritising Indigenous Knowledges and Practices: Working together

Abstract
Australia is considered to have the oldest living culture on the planet, with over 65,000 years of continuously living on, and connection to Country, climate and culture. Embedding Indigenous knowledge and practices in research is fundamental in the process of reconciliation, climate action and climate justice. Prioritising relational interactions and collaborations with Indigenous colleagues may not always be possible or easy– although starting with this practice is essential. This intersection of space where Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars come together has been viewed as a fragile or contentious space as neo-liberal university systems have traditionally been dominated by western practices and principles. Prioritising Indigenous academic scholarship is a practice that requires rigorous study, nuanced sensitivity to cultural difference, and careful consideration of one's own positionality within hegemonic structures of power. Addressing the linked crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and the ecocidal degradation of lands, airs, and waters requires collaboration and solidarity with Indigenous peoples in order to secure a livable future on Earth. By doing so, we are not relying on Indigenous colleagues to always lead the work, nor suffer from cultural load stressors. In this presentation we will showcase authentic ways in which we can work together to prioritise Indigenous Knowledges and Practices.
