Personal preferences for end-of-life care among Taiwanese community city dwellers : an inductive approach for qualitative data

Abstract
Background: As an increasing number of Taiwanese people live out the final stages of their lives with chronic and complex conditions. Care decisions at the end of life can also be complex, overwhelming and stressful for an individual, family and health professionals. Understanding individuals’ wishes for end-of-life care and factors which influence individuals' decisions is important so that the provision of quality end-of-life care for all can be promoted and ensured.
Aim: The aim of this study was to explore community member’s preferences for care provided at the end of life.
Methods: Sixteen community city dwellers voluntarily participated in a semi-structured interview, with the assistance of the City Government. Interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. An inductive analysis approach was utilized to generate the codes, categories and themes from raw interview data.
Results: The major themes emerging from this study highlighted the importance of timing of communication and decision making, being optimistic, providing specific information and involving support persons in end-of-life communication. Other themes related to individuals’ preparation for the end of life and maintenance of quality of life.
Conclusion: Findings from this study provide an overview of individuals’ preferences for end-of-life care in which the preferred care is influenced by various factors over time.
Implications for practice: These findings highlight the importance of improving awareness of end-of-life issues within the community and the importance of promoting practical guidelines to facilitate planning for healthcare wishes at the end of life.
