Abstract

Specialist Studies in Education learner engagement
Like most teachers I know I am deeply commitment to informed and high quality teaching and learning. Within my teacher chat I will share some ideas of how and why I teach, and the impact my approach to teaching has on student engagement and learning. I'll use straightforward terms and examples that everyone can understand and use as I think a teacher should-above all else-aim for clarity and understanding. The chat will be informal and interactive as teaching is about developing relationships: relationships between teacher and student; student and student; and student and new ways of knowing and working. Further, I will mainly discuss exercises and approaches to teaching that can be employed equally by sessional tutors as senior academics. This is deliberate as it is estimated that 80% of undergraduate teaching is undertaken by sessional staff who don't always have control over other aspects of the courses into which they teach such as required readings and assessment tasks and criteria (Percy, A., Scoufis, M., Parry, S., Goody, A., Hicks, M., 2008). Finally, I will specifically discuss exercises I employ to engage students in the first tutorial of a course-exercises that are transferable, easy to facilitate, and help to create a positive student orientation and learner engagement.
