Abstract
The 'ideal' body has been the subject of increasing attention over the past hundred years.1 In Australia, considerable media and government attention has focused on the so called 'obesity epidemic' over the past few years. Whilst the fact that Australians and many other people throughout the world are heavier on average now than they were 30 years ago is not in dispute, what this paper will propose is that naming 'obesity' as the central issue on which to focus is inaccurate, ineffective and harmful. The aim of this paper is to contribute to debate about the healthiest public policies to address the issue of increasing weight.
