Abstract

Specialist Studies in Education
MyTed stands for My Tertiary Education Day and it matters. It is a project that encourages primary school students and their parents to consider tertiary education opportunities. The research arises from the HEPPP-funded project - MyTED. It works on the premise that students are unable to aspire to attend tertiary education if they are unaware of the opportunities that are available to them or even that University or TAFE exists. Education matters therefore MyTED matters. The project aims to: • Enhance the capacity of primary school aged children and their parents to aspire to attend tertiary education. • Promote dialogue through the sharing of narratives about non-traditional routes to higher education highlighting the barriers and enablers that supported them to attain a tertiary education. • Increase capacity through exposure to a tertiary education facility. • Increase capacity through the use of the MyTED eBook. Research Questions: 1. What are the aspirations of a group of primary school students and their parents for their future? 2. How does exposure to a tertiary education environment affect the capacity to aspire to participate in tertiary education? 3. In what ways does an eBook about aspirations, that includes stories from tertiary education graduates, inform the capacity to aspire to participate in higher education? MyTED utilises a participatory research methodology which includes the students as researchers of their own aspirations, working alongside academics. The students use Photovoice to collect data due to its accessibility by all students and their parents. Photographs are contextualised using a photo acronym. Photovoice evolved into a new method for collecting data that we have called MyVoice. MyVoice allows students to capture their point of view through visual design. Students can opt to draw their aspirations and contextualise them by answering a series of questions. We all know the benefits of an education, MyTED matters!
