Abstract
Multiplexing is a chemical or spatial conundrum in molecular diagnostics. Detection of more entities requires a linear increase in the number of components that translate detection into signal. However, data explosion is not new to computational scientists. These computational scientists use special data encoding schemes to reduce the processing power and time for calculation of results. We have used this approach to create a novel binary encoding scheme for the multiplexed detection of nucleic acids on a lateral flow device. We also borrowed the ubiquitous 7-segment display to demonstrate the first numerical result display on a paper-based biosensor. Our lateral flow biosensor is capable of hepta-plex detection on a linear scale, while the binary encoding concept allows the detection of 10 different theoretical analytes. Our study points to a new power for developing multiplexed molecular biosensors with novel result display.
