Abstract

Specialist Studies in Education information communication technologies ICT early childhood professional
The prevalence of ICTs within society and education continues to impact upon, and contribute to, the changing role of the early childhood educator. This paper examines how early childhood professionals manage, adapt and experience change, and the factors that influence and result in a change in approach. A grounded theory study was undertaken to examine how early childhood educators manage their changing roles regarding the use of ICTs. The findings from twenty interviews and rigorous data analysis, revealed complex and multi-faceted insights into how early childhood educators experience and respond to change and the internal and external factors that influence change. While there were an array of external factors that influenced early childhood educators to change their practices with ICTs, such as the children, parents and management expectations, it was the internal influences and the power of personal attitude, mindset, beliefs and life experiences which were critical influences to bring about change. This paper presents opportunities to: learn and gain insights into how early childhood educators manage their evolving role with ICTs; reflect upon existing practices and attitudes towards ICTs; and apply new knowledge to engaging with, and managing change with, ICTs.
