Abstract
Background: Approximately 80% of the world's people with disabilities live in developing countries and they may be considered among "the poorest of the poor" from multiple perspectives. For example vulnerable people may be often left out of the consultation processes due to problems with transport and access or communication difficulties. Thus it may be difficult for decision-makers in countries providing aid to developing countries to understand the lives of the vulnerable members of recipient communities. Research aims: Australia provides aid to many developing countries, including Timor Leste. The main researcher employed a phenomenological approach to examine and document the lived experiences of people with disabilities in Timor Leste. The aim of the research was to provide better understanding of their lives to help guide those preparing aid programmes, such as policy-makers or aid practitioners. Research methods: The research question was 'What is the lived experience of disability in Timor Leste?". In a pilot study four people with disabilities in remote Timor Leste used digital cameras for five days to take photographs that would help answer the following guiding questions (1) "What is it like to be you?" (2) "How do you do your daily tasks?" and (3) "Can you show by photographs what is important to you in your daily life?" Over 400 hundred photographs were produced. The photographs were analysed using thematic content analysis and themes were checked using a peer cross-checking process. Research findings: Themes identified through the analysis process were: difficulties in daily activities and how these difficulties are managed, how roles within families are managed by people with disabilities and the influence of the local culture on the daily lived experiences of people with disabilities.
