Abstract

Curriculum and Pedagogy inclusively
There is widespread recognition of the need to acknowledge cultural and linguistic diversity in university learning and teaching, yet many staff are uncertain about how to proceed. Issues of dealing with controversial and potentially offensive topics combine with anxiety about the staff member's knowledge and skills in this area "outside" our professional expertise. How will we avoid giving offence or deal with students' comments? Can we really cater to cultural and linguistic differences in our curriculum and our pedagogy? Should we even try or is that falling into the trap of stereotyping our students on the basis of their nationality, name or appearance? Are these questions only issues in programs like teaching or social work? Does engineering or biometrics teaching have cultural considerations? The workshop will present key findings from current research and experience teaching about cultural diversity and effective engagement and encourage critical reflection on the efforts and experiences of participants. It is hoped to be able to establish a Community of Practice in this area (or if it has commenced, to publicise it within USC).
