Abstract

Specialist Studies in Education Library and Information Studies library education information literacy tutoring
In teaching and supporting academic and information literacy skills for an assessment task, it is equally important to focus on the student's learning experience as it is on the end product. At the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC), a small, regional University in south-east Queensland, a collaborative support model has been operating in the Faculty of Business, since 2008 and more recently replicated in other Faculties which attempts to redress this disconnection between research, writing and content within the student learning cycle. In the first stage, the Librarian and Academic Skills Advisor team-teach information literacy and academic skills, during Business Faculty lectures, contextualized within a piece of assessment. In the second stage, a collaborative consultation service called Business drop-in (BUdi), offers students one-on-one assessment support, provided by a Librarian, an Academic Skills Adviser and a growing number of academics, assembled in one location. Using small group discussion, reflection and feedback, this workshop will explore the relevance and applicability of the USC model to the UK tertiary sector and showcase leading UK collaborative support models. Participants will gain insight into facilitation and impact analysis of combined skills initiatives that could be implemented in their own practice areas, to further engage students in the learning process.
